Role Description: 

ShipBob views Data Engineering as a true Center of Excellence across our entire platform and organization, and we are looking for a senior leader that can make this vision a reality. The Director, Data Engineering will oversee a wide range of data-related functions to define, develop, build, and sustain enterprise data, governance, quality, and availability and for building a data-driven culture. This will be a data strategy role that will champion data, data governance, and data quality as strategic disciplines to meet operational and regulatory requirements while steering initiatives forward in a hyper growth environment. The successful candidate will provide the leadership and vision to effectively serve all data and reporting needs across ShipBob's lines of business. 

The Director, Data Engineering will be responsible for developing a data platform (data lake / data fabric / data hub) to securely manage, store and govern both structured and unstructured data across the organization. The data fabric will be used to connect the data used across multiple operational systems, including transactional, marketing, finance, and HR data. This is scattered across many internal and external systems, including relational and NoSQL databases and external sources, such as Salesforce and Pendo.   

This role will work in close collaboration with Finance, Accounting, Engineering, and Operations to modernize the data technology platform, ensure an effective and transparent governance structure, and democratize the data to derive business insights, enabling BI, machine learning and AI capabilities. 

The ideal candidate will have significant experience with a host of analytics tools and platforms and will be a collaborative executive, capable of building and managing a diverse team, building trusting relationships with cross-functional partners, and demonstrated experience managing a data function in a complex organization.  

What you’ll do: 

  • Be a Change Agent, guiding the vision and long-term strategy for enabling every function in the company to leverage data in making key business decisions. 
  • Build Data Engineering as a Center of Excellence at ShipBob, from a functional team perspective and as an operational practice. 
  • Attract, hire, develop, and inspire data engineering managers, data engineers, and business analysts at all levels is a primary responsibility. 
  • Own the planning, staffing, and execution of the performance and development of your entire organization while holding managers and senior level individual contributors accountable to their goals. 
  • Influence C-Level leaders within Technology, Finance, Revenue/Sales, Product and Operations to align on common definitions of core concepts such as leads, opportunities, revenue, margin and business segmentation into core businesses vs. bets/adjacencies.  
  • Champion best practices and standards for data management, data interchange and integration, data warehousing, data security and data governance across ShipBob. 
  • Responsible for the delivery of the Data Engineering organization, oversee the development of ShipBob enterprise data systems, along with collection, storage, management, quality, and data protection from requirements to releasing the capabilities to production. You will own the data platform, pipelines, and interchange formats for all teams to make their data available. 
  • Provide technical guidance; you look around corners and anticipate technical issues at the product level and make architectural and design decisions to avoid them. 
  • Actively identify opportunities for talent beyond the team’s scope through systems thinking and enterprise-wide awareness of needs and opportunities. 
  • Keep pace with the changing business environment, technology, and data innovation to optimize data value and mitigate risks. You anticipate technical issues and engineering process bottlenecks and collaborate with stakeholders to develop solutions to overcome them. 
  • Run initiatives for data accuracy, usability, availability, and efficiency for BI and analytics applications to democratize the data and eliminate data fiefdoms. 
  • Deliver high impact dashboards and self-service visualization and analytical tools. 
  • Define and manage SLAs for all production data processes. 
  • Ensure ShipBob follows data governance and GDPR compliance framework to enable data quality assurance, data protection, and compliance processes with global and local regulations. 
  • Collaborate with the Finance and Accounting teams to ensure smooth monthly, Quarterly and Yearly closing. 
  • Partner with the Product and Engineering teams to ensure smooth operation of production services, and easy transition of data from the production environment to the data warehouse. 
  • Work closely with the Operations teams to ensure they have timely and accurate data to report on. 
  • Additional duties and responsibilities as necessary. 

What you’ll bring to the table: 

  • 15+ years of experience building, managing, and inspiring successively larger, high performing data engineering teams in a fast-paced environment. 
  • 10+ years of experience developing solutions for data extraction, preparation, and loading of data from a variety of relational and non-relational sources into enterprise data lake, data warehouse and/or data fabric environments. 
  • 5+ years of experience managing managers and large teams with a solid track record cultivating healthy and high performing environments. 
  • 5+ years of experience with relational databases and, SQL and Transact-SQL. 
  • 5+ years of experience working with a NoSQL data warehouse: Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Redis using both native query languages as well as REST and GraphQL API frameworks. 
  • Established track record of building data platforms, pipelines, and interchange formats for distributed, service-oriented teams to make their data available to the company wide data lake. 
  • Demonstrated track record of seeing around corners to identify future risks and opportunities while proactively developing plans to address and solve for them. 
  • Successfully scaled a technical team while creating an environment where team members can see themselves in the big picture and how their work contributes to the vision. 
  • Demonstrated track record of making effective decisions having companywide impact amid high levels of complexity and ambiguity. 
  • Success delivering and maintaining both modern and traditional production-grade, cloud-based, enterprise data lakes, data warehouses, and data hubs including automated data acquisition, standardization, record matching, processing, and support for ML workloads. 
  • Familiarity with BI toolsets that help democratize data; ability to conceptualize and build solutions that drive efficiency and reduce cycle time for analytics teams within departments (Finance, Operations, Revenue/Sales etc). 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Familiar with global data protection requirements and compliance regulations (such as GDPR) and certifications (such as SOC-2 and ISO 27001).

ShipBob believes in transparency while providing a competitive total compensation package with a pay for performance approach. We are targeting a salary range of $201,601 - $336,001 for this role. The full base pay range for this position in our compensation architecture is $201,601 - $336,001.
