About this role

Udemy is seeking an experienced Director within the Data Products organization to lead our Personalization efforts. In this role, you will be responsible for managing a high-performing team of data scientists, machine learning, and software engineers to deliver an exceptional learning discovery experience on Udemy through recommendations and personalized experiences. As a director, you will work closely with product managers, marketers, data scientists, and engineers to own Udemy’s algorithmic personalization efforts. Success in this role requires a combination of strong leadership and people management skills, a deep understanding of AI/ML techniques and systems, and experience in developing and scaling data products.

We are looking for an energetic, optimistic, and independent leader who is passionate about driving increased access to high-quality education in the world. The ideal candidate is a team-oriented, technical leader who has a broad knowledge of AI/ML development best practices, strong product intuition, the ability to balance long-term architectural considerations with a pragmatic focus on near-term delivery, and experience navigating ambiguity in large organizations to drive fast progress on complex cross-functional technical initiatives. We are interested in building a diverse, collaborative, and fun environment. Come help us improve lives through learning!

What you’ll do:

  • Recruit, hire, and retain an amazing team of high-caliber data scientists and engineers.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders to shape the data products roadmap and drive execution.
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and career mentorship for team members.
  • Maintain high-quality standards, effective team processes, and best practices in both data science and engineering.
  • Build Udemy’s technical brand through talks, blog posts, and publications.

What you’ll have:

  • 8+ years of experience in data science and engineering roles
  • 4+ years of experience building complex AI/ML products at scale in cross-functional teams
  • 4+ years of management experience, including at least 1+ years of experience at the Director level or above
  • Strong knowledge of the ML lifecycle, engineering best practices, and A/B testing
  • Hands-on experience with a variety of fundamental AI/ML methods
  • Strong knowledge of applied statistics, deep learning, and software engineering (preferred but not required)

We understand that not everyone will match each of the above qualifications. However, we also realize that everyone has unique experiences that can add value to our company. Even if you think your background might not perfectly align, we'd love to hear from you!
