At Udemy, data scientists generally belong to one of three career tracks:

  • Insights: Focused on analytics, data visualization, A/B testing, and stakeholder partnership.
  • Inference: Focused on causal or statistical inference for interpretation of data.
  • Algorithms: Focused on machine learning and building production data products.

Specifically, Udemy Business is a SaaS offering that provides employees of companies with access to a specially curated collection of business-relevant and technical courses delivered through the Udemy platform. In this role, you will collaborate with product managers, marketers, designers, and engineers to guide product decision-making through a combination of metrics and reporting, data analysis, data visualization, and experimentation design. You will serve as a subject matter expert, especially while working with other data scientists and act as a data evangelist to create a data-driven culture across the company. Success in this role requires a combination of business intuition, practical data analysis experience, experimentation acumen, and strong communication and collaboration skills.

Relevant questions

  • What are the right metrics for measuring the employee learning experience for Udemy’s enterprise product?
  • What dashboards and tools can Udemy build to provide actionable insights for enterprise clients?
  • How should we measure the impact of new feature launches for the enterprise product?
  • How can the Udemy Business product drive outcomes for business clients?

Responsibilities

  • Influence prioritization and key business decisions through data-driven insights
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and help drive the data science roadmap in your business or product domain
  • Define metrics and build operational dashboards to track business and product health
  • Design and analyze randomized controlled experiments
  • Develop robust data pipelines and continuously improve the quality and accessibility of data
  • Build Udemy’s technical brand through talks, blog posts, and publications
  • Provide mentorship for junior team members
  • Take responsibility for leading major team initiatives

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant hands-on experience in product or business analytics roles
  • Demonstrated track record leading major team projects in prior roles
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong business intuition and judgment
  • Exceptional data storytelling and data visualization ability
  • Broad knowledge of applied statistics and experimental design
  • Expert SQL ability and proficiency with 1+ programming languages (e.g., R or Python)
  • Experience building automated big data pipelines using tools like Spark, Airflow, and dbt.
  • Ability and willingness to work autonomously, relentlessly prioritize, and collaborate with team members across time zones
