About Extend:
Extend is modernizing the $100 billion-per-year protection plan industry using cutting-edge technology and top-notch customer service.
Our technology-forward omnichannel and API-first solution allows any merchant to offer protection plans, both online and in store, while also providing a merchant's end customers with a vastly improved and modern support experience that eliminates many of the issues customers face today with legacy underwriters. More recently, Extend also launched a shipping protection solution, covering consumers in the case of lost, damaged or stolen packages. This is further expanding the company’s addressable market and value creation for merchants.
We are a venture-backed startup in downtown San Francisco led by founders who have previously had multiple successful exits. Extend simplifies the technology stack for the product and shipping protection industries.
We are looking for a Senior Data Platform Engineer to help us continue maturing our enterprise merchant-facing platform. This position requires a blend of skills across Solutions Engineering, Data Engineering, and Platform Engineering, with a focus on designing scalable, resilient, and forward-looking solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Big Picture Thinking: You'll map unique data schemas and flows to our current and future platform capabilities, keeping long-term scalability and sustainability in mind.
- Implement Anti-Corruption Layers: You will design and build systems to handle diverse data schemas, ensuring the isolation of uniqueness and the consistency of downstream data.
- Defensive Coding: Data integration points can be brittle, and we need engineers who can anticipate and defend against potential data issues. You'll build robust solutions to handle the complexity and prevent errors.
- Mentorship: We value a low-ego, highly collaborative environment. You will have the opportunity to mentor teammates, lead by example, and contribute to the broader organization.
- Cutting-Edge Technologies: You will work in AWS, leveraging technologies such as Lambda, DynamoDB, Glue, and step-functions. You’ll collaborate closely with teams focused on infrastructure and developer experience.
- Event-Driven Architecture: We are moving towards a fully event-driven architecture, using Kafka to decouple dependencies and increase the robustness of our platform.
- Ownership Mentality: In this role, you’ll own your work end-to-end. You will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, correctness, and performance of the code you write. This is not a role for someone who requires step-by-step guidance; we’re looking for proactive problem-solvers.
Qualifications:
- Experience: 8+ years in Data Engineering, Platform Engineering, or related fields.
- Expertise in AWS: Proven experience working with AWS services (Lambda, DynamoDB, Glue, etc.).
- Event-Driven Architecture: Hands-on experience with event-driven systems and Kafka.
- Strong Problem-Solving Skills: A track record of building and optimizing large-scale data platforms and integrations.
- Leadership and Mentorship: Experience mentoring and guiding engineers, with a collaborative and humble approach.
Technologies You'll Work With:
- AWS (Lambda, DynamoDB, Glue, Step Functions)
- Kafka for event-driven architecture
- Python, Typescript, NodeJS
Remote Work:
We are 100% remote, with team members located across the USA. While we respect work-life balance, there may occasionally be times when night or weekend work is required for critical tasks. Collaboration during core hours is expected.
If you’re passionate about building resilient data platforms and enjoy working in a collaborative, remote-first environment, we encourage you to apply. Please include your resume and, in your application, describe your philosophy on implementing anti-corruption layers and how it applies to maintaining data integrity in complex systems.
