Job Summary:

  • Exploration of AI risk assessment technologies that resulted in a new B2B big data venture, Arity – a startup with the backing of a Fortune 100 company
  • Exploration of emerging device (e.g. smart phone) protection space that resulted in $1.4B acquisition of SquareTrade Inc.
  • Exploration of digital protection space that resulted in $525M acquisition of identity protection company InfoArmor Inc.
  • Exploration of peer-to-peer space that resulted in a new P2P car sharing venture, Avail – a startup with the backing of a Fortune 100 company

Job Summary (cont.)

Innovation projects typically feature cross-functional teams with expertise in Business Strategy, Product, Technology, and Design.  We work in a variety of different spaces, industries, and emerging technology areas.  Example areas of exploration include: AI/ML (incl. generative AI), future of automotive (EVs, autonomous vehicles), climate risks, and Web3 (de-centralized consumer data). 

This role will join an Innovation team that is developing algorithms and models for a new generation of insurance products.  As a Senior Data Scientist, you will work on models from pricing to underwriting, utilizing geospatial, actuarial, statistical, and machine learning methodologies. You will collaborate closely with multiple organizations across Allstate Enterprise to support key business goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify, understand and solve product/pricing problems by performing analysis that involves retrieving and analyzing both internal and external data.
  • Assist with analysis and implementation of changes to existing geospatial-based insurance products as well as the development of new class of personal risk products.
  • Perform collaborative product reviews that require analysis of trends, factors, issues, and emerging products/companies/technologies
  • Ability to drive for results, share and communicate findings, deal with ambiguity, wrangle data, solve problems, and draw conclusions in a less-structured innovation environment.
  • Ability to derive insights from small and large data sets, while communicating the limitations of the analysis.

Key Responsibilities (cont.)

  • Use best practices in statistical/modeling techniques to develop and maintain rating, economic, and other models as necessary and in consideration of business goals.
  • Provide tools, educate and support cross functional teams in the implementation of models and other decision-making support. 
  • Support the development/ design of new plans, programs, processes, products up to moderate complexity, with minimal direction
  • Assist in the development of communication strategies and materials to support new plans, programs, processes, products; solicit input from stakeholders.

Relevant Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required – preferably in related field of study such as actuarial science, math/applied math, statistics/applied statistics, economics, environmental science, or computer science.
  • Past experience with geospatial, satellite, weather, and other non-traditional to insurance datasets. 
  • Understands economics of insurance; several years of experience with personal lines ratemaking and rating plans. 
  • Working knowledge of insurance regulation and related business constraints.
  • Experience in using statistical and machine learning modeling techniques such as linear regression, logistic regression, GLM, GAM, GBM, etc.
  • Experience in the use of data sources and applications to conduct research.
  • Master’s or PhD in a quantitative field — math/applied math, statistics/applied statistics, economics, environmental science, or computer science.

Relevant Experience (cont.)

  • Strong technical knowledge, aptitude to learn, and curiosity.
  • Strong programming experience with Python preferred – R, SAS, Matlab or other scientific programming languages can be discussed
  • Working knowledge of using databases and SQL, Spark is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to effectively collaborate with multi-disciplinary groups and all organizational levels. 
  • High level organizational, decision making, and project management skills in order to handle multiple concurrent assignments.

Compensation offered for this role is $102,300.00-$140,025.00 per year and is based on experience and qualifications.
