Purpose of Job
We are seeking a talented Data Engineer Lead for our San Antonio, TX or Plano, TX facility. This position may also have the option of working remotely in the continental U.S. with occasional travel as requested.

USAA’s Technology Business Management Office (TBMO) is a vital function within IT to provide decision-makers with insights and analysis to help drive efficiencies across IT. As a Data Engineer Lead, you will work across IT and finance organizations to gather requirements, analyze data and develop reports and dashboards for our customers and IT Leaders, and present findings that will help drive efficiencies within IT.
Data Engineers (DEs) are engaged in all phases of the data management lifecycle. This includes gathering and analyzing requirements, collecting, processing, storing, securing, and archiving data. Develop and maintain technical systems for data reporting and technical solutions utilizing emerging technologies. Partner with the business to ensure data management solutions aligned to business objectives.

Tasks:
- Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.
- Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.
- Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.
- Leads the team in designing, testing and implementing the most complex technical solutions for data reporting and analytic systems utilizing innovative architectural concepts, new methodologies and emerging technologies.
- As a subject matter expert, provides guides team in designing, building and managing data pipelines for data structures that encompass data transformation, data models, schemas, metadata, data quality, and workload management.
- Leads all aspects of design reviews with stakeholders and cross-functional partners. Breaks down business features into technical stories and approaches on the most complex concepts to ensure delivery of efficient design solutions.
- Helps develop, maintain, and enforce the company’s data development tools and standards. Conduct code reviews on a regular basis to improve quality and ensure compliance
- Creates and/oversees the development of data pipelines, extracting data from our various applications (internal & external sources) into the Data Platform.
- Proactively identifies and re-engineers data processes to improve overall efficiency and business value.
- Creates proof of concepts and prototypes on the most complex solutions identified and presents to Senior leadership to deliver on vision for solution. Influences leadership on design solutions.
- Creates and implements efficient defect management, root cause analysis, and resolution processes.
- Ensures that team builds processes that support effective data management, metadata management, and good data quality.
- Manages projects within team and work effectively with cross-functional teams. Keeps leadership and senior leadership informed on status of ongoing projects.
- Provides guidance and works with team members to ensure successful completion of tasks and serves as a mentor for team members.
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
- 8 years of data engineering, data analysis or software development experience implementing data solutions to include 3 years demonstrated technical leadership experience and/or leading teams.
- 3 years of data engineering or data management experience.
- Deep experience with multiple technologies and product lines across a company.
- Experience with end to end delivering of data solutions that includes building, managing, and optimizing data pipelines across cloud environments; curating and modeling the data for various types of consumers/products and their pattern of usage to include data marts, data lake, and operational analytic applications.
- Experience completing multiple projects leveraging the agile methodology in delivering data.
- Extensive Experience in SQL and Relational Databases
Preferred experience:
- 2 years’ experience working with ServiceNow CMDB and Asset Management
- 2 years’ experience working with Apptio
- Experience leading working sessions within IT domains to lead data accuracy improvement efforts ,and define/optimize data models.
- 5 years’ experience analyzing financial and IT operational data.

Compensation:
USAA has an effective method for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this skill is: $117,600 - $211,700*
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
Geographical Differential: Geographic pay differential is additional pay provided to eligible employees working in locations where market pay levels are above the national average.
Shift premium: will be addressed on an individual-basis for applicable roles that are consistently scheduled for non-core hours.
