Responsibilities

Steady is seeking a sharp, highly-motivated Director, Data Engineering who is excited to play a major role in our product, platform, and engineering evolution. We are looking for a product-focused, results-oriented Director, Data Engineering who thrives in a collaborative, team-focused culture. You will work closely with data scientists, data operations professionals, data analysts, engineers, product managers, business stakeholders, and your team to help define, implement, and ship significant, innovative improvements to the data infrastructure that powers Steady’s mission-driven products.

As a Director, Data Engineering, you will:

  • Lead, develop, and grow a high-performing data engineering team
  • Function as a technical leader with data engineering domain expertise, as described in the Skills & Requirements section below
  • Collaboratively facilitate and guide Data Team and inter-departmental architectural and technical choices
  • Systematically manage, drive, coordinate, and lead initiatives that are critical to Steady’s success
  • Work inter-departmentally to achieve objectives in a seamless, collaborative fashion
  • Ensure that the team designs, develops, and delivers high-quality, performant, scalable, well-tested, documented, and sensible technical solutions suitable to high-impact technical challenges
  • Oversee and roadmap administration, maintenance, and improvements to Steady’s data infrastructure and data processing pipelines, including ETL jobs, events processing, Spark job pipeline orchestration, and job monitoring and alerting
  • Engage in all phases of the agile software development lifecycle in a cross-functional team setting
  • Partner with engineers, data scientists, and senior leadership to define and refine our data architecture and technology choices
  • Fearlessly work across components, services, and concerns to deliver business value
  • Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and business partners to prepare and deliver complex data sets that can be used to solve difficult problems
  • Help define, implement, and reinforce data engineering best practices and processes
  • Contribute to Steady’s technical vision

Skills & Requirements

  • Preferably 5+ years of work experience building, managing, and leading high-performing, diverse, collaborative, and geographically distributed data engineering teams
  • Preferably 7+ years of hands-on data engineering and/or software development experience
  • Demonstrated ability as a strategic technical partner, working collaboratively with data analytics, data science, product, engineering, and other cross-functional partners, to plan, prioritize, and achieve company goals, ideally using OKRs
  • Experience starting, leading, and evolving technical forums, with effective soft skills, as well as representing data engineering and architectural considerations in cross-team settings
  • Experience developing and nurturing data engineering talent, including implementing training, upskilling, and mentorship plans
  • Expert-level engineering, architecture, and system design knowledge, with strong computer science fundamentals
  • Experience developing efficient and scalable production software in Python, Java, or other programming languages commonly used in data engineering
  • Understanding of event-driven and/or streaming workflows with tools like Kafka and Spark
  • Aptitude with ETL concepts and tools, including experience ingesting, processing, and transforming a variety of data at scale
  • Proficiency with SQL and NoSQL databases, data warehousing concepts, and cloud-based analytics database (e.g. Snowflake or Redshift) administration
  • Experience with infrastructure tools like Istio, Kubernetes, CloudFormation, etc.
  • Experience with indexing and search technologies, such as Elasticsearch
  • Highly preferred: Experience building or maintaining a data science development environment such as SageMaker or Databricks, including deployment and monitoring using MLOps best practices and concepts, as well as tools like MLflow
  • Preferred: Experience administering data transformation tools, e.g. dbt
  • Passionate about data lineage, quality, and consistency
  • Experience with the AWS data ecosystem
  • Highly desirable: deep fintech experience, or experience in a similarly data-rich environment, particularly in startups
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate complex concepts to a wide range of audiences
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, agile, and dynamic environment, while exuding a can-do attitude
  • Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects while working independently and in teams of all sizes with representatives from a diverse set of technical backgrounds
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent; team leadership and management training is a plus
