Principal BI Engineer

Principal BI Engineer

About the Group

This Business Intelligence Infrastructure product group is responsible for making HubSpot smarter by enabling a deeper understanding of its customers. They're not a centralized reporting-only team, they're a team of engineers who partner with our business leaders to understand the nuances of the data and HubSpot systems and provide access to the data they need to manage our business intelligently. They tackle HubSpot’s most complex data challenges, manage our BI data infrastructure, and provide support to each other and to a network of business analysts throughout the company. You will get to work in a best-in-class tech stack that includes Airflow, Snowflake, dbt, and Looker.

About the Role

This role sits within our Data Platform Pillar, on our Data Infrastructure Operations team. The team has two primary missions 1) Improving the performance of Looker and Snowflake assets through targeted consultation and automation and 2) Integrating, configuring, and administering 3rd party tools within our data infrastructure. They’re also tasked with supporting internal analytics teams who build on top of our data infrastructure and partnering with the software engineers on the Data Platform Pillar who are building the 1st party systems within that infrastructure.

We are looking for a Principal BI Engineer to serve in an architect role for our department. They will report to BI Infra’s Director of Engineering and partner with the leaders of the BI Data Platform pillar and BI Data Infrastructure Operations team to create a vision for, and take part in design of, a modern data infrastructure. This person will be a thought leader in the data infrastructure space, and evangelize a cost effective modernization of our data infrastructure across HubSpot’s distributed analytics organization. They will lean on their industry experience, and the experience and input of other analytics leaders at HubSpot.

Key Expectations:

  • A Principal BI Engineer is recognized throughout their product line as an engineering mentor and technology leader
  • Have hands-on experience developing and supporting a modern data infrastructure, including cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake, BI tools such as Looker, and data orchestration platforms such as Airflow
  • Highly proficient in SQL, with a focus on data warehousing best practices, ideally using dbt as a data modeling platform
  • Have a high empathy for our internal customers and the problems they are solving
  • Can triage bugs in, and make contributions to our codebase. Most of our backend codebase is in Java, but we also have elements written in Python.
  • Their ownership level spans their entire product line and they should be involved in thinking through challenges and opportunities across it
  • They remain hands-on, produce technology directly, and are able to dive deep into technical details
  • They may function as Tech Leads when necessary, leading a team or team(s)
  • They learn new domains quickly and innovate to solve hard problems across any domain or department
  • Their contributions redefine best practices for other technologists and increase the scale of engineers across the organization
  • They partner with product and engineering leadership to identify opportunities and help define product and technical strategy
  • They help assess the organization and give feedback to other engineers and leaders
  • They elevate HubSpot's external brand and recruiting efforts
