Responsibilities
This is a full time remote position within the United States.
The Mayo Collaborative Services IT Division is looking for a Principal Software Engineer to lead the recently approved Technology Strategy to meet current business needs as well as achieve the future vision of Mayo Collaborative Services (MCS) to meet the 2030 goals. Mayo Clinic Laboratories is at the core of MCS. Mayo Clinic Laboratories is a global reference laboratory that helps health care professionals worldwide advance patient care, strengthen their practice and broaden access to specialized testing. The MCL team, in partnership with the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic, processes up to 40,000 patient specimens daily from around the world.
We are seeking a Principal Software (Data) Engineer to design, develop and deploy data pipelines, integrations, and transformations to support analytics and machine learning applications and solutions as part of an assigned product team using various open-source programming languages and vended software to meet the desired design functionality for products and programs. The position requires maintaining an understanding of the organization's current solutions, coding languages, tools, and regularly requires the application of independent judgment. Demonstrated experience in designing, building, and installing data systems and how they are applied to the Department of Data & Analytics technology framework is required. Candidate will partner with product owners and Analytics and Machine Learning delivery teams to identify and retrieve data, conduct exploratory analysis, pipeline and transform data to help identify and visualize trends, build and validate analytical models, and translate qualitative and quantitative assessments into actionable insights. Our Data Engineers work closely with the software engineering, platform, and solutions teams to develop analytics/insights as required to benefit our business, our clients and their patients.
- Works closely with the Product Owners, Product Managers, Architects to translate requirements into code.
- Developing services around data warehousing, big data, cloud computing, business intelligence, analytics and machine learning.
- Participate in DevOps, Agile, continuous development and integration frameworks.
- Programming in high-level languages such as Go, Python, Java etc.
- Ensure all appropriate documentation of processes and source code is created and maintained.
- Communicate effectively with peers, leaders, and customers throughout the organization.
- Will provide consultative services to departments/divisions and leadership committees.
- Participate in expert level troubleshooting and resolve problems through root cause analysis, data and system investigation.
- Contributes to design and architecture discussions with Principals and Architects.
- Leads targeted cross-functional improvement efforts and mentors more junior data engineers.
- Interpret internal or external issues and recommend solutions/best practices, solving complex problems with a broad perspective to identify solutions.
- May lead functional teams or projects.
- Ability to works independently, with guidance in only the most complex situations.

Qualifications
Required qualifications for this position include: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field with 10 years of experience as noted below; or Associate’s Degree in Computer Science / Engineering or related field with 12 years of experience as noted below. Have specialized depth and/or breadth of expertise in software engineering with coding applications or services in a high-level language (C, C++, Golang, Java, C# etc.). Experience developing software services for the cloud with a preference for GCP experience. Demonstrated problem solving and time management skills. Possesses strong technical aptitude for designing and implementing software solutions. Experience with modern application development frameworks Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations. Deep hands-on technical expertise, excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience with Agile software development techniques. Preferred qualifications for this position include:
• Master's degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field.
• Ability to use a wide variety of open-source technologies and cloud-based services.
• Experience in databases, analytics, big data systems or business intelligence products.
• Experience building high-performance, highly available and scalable distributed systems.
• Experience developing software for healthcare related industries.
