About This Role

Strava is the leading social platform for athletes and the largest sports community in the world, with over 95 million athletes in 195 countries. If you sweat you’re an athlete, and Strava’s mobile apps and website connect millions of active people every day! We are looking for machine learning engineers to help us unlock the potential of the unique data from Strava, from our athlete community.

As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Strava, you will work on a wide variety of projects that may require different technologies. You’ll work closely with vertical teams (server/web/mobile engineers, product management, data analysts, user research, etc) to scope, design, and build complex ML systems that power innovative athlete experiences. You’ll work with your teammates and platform teams on ML tooling and infrastructure in order to scale. Your projects will be a healthy mix of product features and infrastructure work.

You’re excited about this opportunity because you will:

  • Design, build, support, and integrate ML applications that have direct impacts on the athletes' experience and the company's growth.

  • Work in a relatively small team where you initiate and drive the entire project from scratch leveraging your industry experience

  • Foster team’s culture and best practices

You will be successful here by:

  • Willing to learn and adapt fast; mindset of being full-stack ML engineers where the work scope expands from data exploration to server/mobile integration; being comfortable stretching out technical scopes, even a bit outside of the ML domain.

  • Learning and approaching novel problems with an open mind

  • Taking ownership of your work, partnering with cross-functional peers to ensure projects are properly scoped and implemented.

  • Demonstrating empathy for athletes and their experience while using Strava.

  • Mentoring other engineers and up-leveling the organization

Some of our Technical Expectations

  • Extensive industry experience working with complex and large-scale ML systems

  • Experience working with some of the popular ML frameworks (Xgboost, TensorFlow, PyTorch, sklearn, etc)

  • Experience working with analytical languages (SQL, Python, R, etc)

  • Experience with at least one modern programming language, such as Python, Java, Scala, etc

  • Experience working with data pipelines (Spark, Hadoop, etc)

  • Bonus point if you have worked in one of the domains: recommendation systems, personalization, ML infrastructure (MLOps, scalable platform, etc)
