The Community You Will Join:

We are seeking a Staff Data Engineer to join our Site Reliability Engineering team. As a Staff Data Engineer, you will work closely with our engineering teams to ensure our services are properly instrumented and able to scale with our growing business. You will be responsible for designing, implementing and maintaining the data pipeline infrastructure to collect, process and store large amounts of data that we generate. This is a staff level position and the ideal candidate should have at least 6-8 years of relevant experience.

By designing, implementing, and maintaining robust and scalable data pipelines, you will enable the reliability teams to efficiently access and utilize data for insights and informed decision-making. Ultimately your curiosity and knack for data will enable us to systematically identify leading reliability indicators, which will drive how we strategically invest in reliability efforts.

A Typical Day: 

  • Design and build data pipelines to ingest, process, and store data generated by our systems, services and applications.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance ETL processes to ensure data accuracy and consistency across multiple systems and data stores.
  • Implement monitoring and alerting systems to ensure data pipeline performance and reliability.
  • Partner with other engineers and data scientists to design and implement data models and schemas that support data analysis and business insights.
  • Create and maintain documentation for data pipeline architecture, data schemas, and data flows.
  • Ensure that data security and privacy standards are maintained throughout the data pipeline.
  • Continuously evaluate and implement new technologies to improve our data pipeline performance and scalability.


Your Expertise:

  • 8+ years of experience in a data engineering or software engineering role, with a focus on large scale data processing and storage.
  • Strong coding skills in at least one programming language, such as Python, Java, or Scala.
  • Experience with distributed data processing frameworks such as Hadoop, Spark, or Flink.
  • Experience with cloud-based data processing and storage technologies such as AWS EMR, S3, Redshift, or Google Cloud Dataproc, BigQuery, or Cloud Storage.
  • Strong understanding of relational and NoSQL databases and data modeling.
  • Experience with data streaming and real-time data processing technologies such as Kafka or Kinesis.
  • Experience with Apache Airflow to build data pipelines. The candidate should be proficient in using Apache Airflow to create workflows, automate data pipelines, and manage dependencies.
  • Deep understanding of visualization platforms such as Superset and Tableau to create visually compelling and informative reports that help stakeholders reason about complex data.
  • Understanding of data security and privacy best practices.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

This position is US - Remote Eligible. The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites, as agreed to with your manager. Our job titles may span more than one career level. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs and market demands. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. This role may also be eligible for bonus, equity, benefits, and Employee Travel Credits.

$200,000—$254,000 USD
