The Music Expression team is focused on enabling creative expression through and around music and video by artists, aspiring creators, and fans. Our products are used at scale -- over 1,000,000 active artists in Spotify for Artists and more than 380,000,000 listeners.

We are looking for a Data Scientist Intern to Join The Band and help drive a data-first culture across Spotify. Our Data Scientist mission is to turn terabytes of data into insights and get a deep understanding of music and listeners so that we can impact the strategy and direction of Spotify. You will study user behaviour, critical initiatives, markets, content, and new features and bring data and insights into every decision we make. Above all, your work will affect the way the world experiences all forms of music expression.

What you'll do

    • Perform analyses on large sets of data to extract practical insights from both the creator and consumer experience that will help drive decision-making across the business.
    • Define metrics and help set goals to align different stakeholders and work streams on how to measure our success and progress.
    • Build dashboards, data pipelines, and recurring reporting results, providing insight into how our products are being used and identifying new product opportunities.
    • Communicate data insights and recommendations to key collaborators.
    • Work closely with cross-functional teams of product owners, marketers, user researchers, engineers, designers, and others across the company who are passionate about Spotify’s success.
    • Be a member of the Spotify-wide data science and insights community.

Who you are

    • Pursuing a degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics or fields that prominently feature the application of statistics, such as Physics, Economics, Biology, or Psychology.
    • Have a graduation date of 2023
    • Currently have valid work authorization to work in the country in which this role is based that will extend from June to August 2023.
    • Possess strong interpersonal skills and comfort working with partners across fields.
    • Harbor a passion for numbers and the use of data to make decisions.
    • Experienced in cleaning and performing analyses with large datasets and coming up with thoughtful answers and impactful insights.
    • Proficient in Python and SQL and experienced with data visualization tooling (e.g. Tableau, Looker)
    • Familiar with dbt, Airflow, or similar data transformation tools.
    • Experienced with A/B testing methodologies and various analysis techniques, such as significance testing, regression, statistical modeling, or machine learning.

    • Where in the world? For this role, it can be within the Americas region in which we have a work location. Preferably in New York.

    • Working hours? We operate within the Eastern Standard time zone for collaboration. 
Our paid summer internships last for 10-13 weeks and start at the beginning of June. The last day to apply is February 27th, 2023 at 10AM EST.

The United States hourly rate for this position is 33.00 USD (Undergraduate First Year & Sophomores), 42.00 USD (Undergraduate Juniors & Seniors), 49.00 USD (Masters) & 58.00 USD (PhD) per hour plus a one time intern stipend of 2,253 USD. This position is overtime eligible. These rates may be modified in the future.
