Analytics Engineer, DNC Programs

This job is no longer open
The Democratic National Committee’s Tech team is hiring an Analytics Engineer to clean, repackage, and build pipelines around the data that supports our outreach programs. From grassroots fundraising to distributed organizing efforts, this role will have an impact on reaching millions of volunteers and donors to help Democrats win elections all across the country. As an Analytics Engineer, you’ll be part of the technical and analytical team that partner with the Mobilization and Organizing teams to optimize our outreach efforts for this crucial midterms cycle.

Who we are:
The DNC Program Analytics team, which you will be a part of, is a new team at the DNC. We are a team of analysts and technologists focused on improving the DNC’s core programs from national field organizing to grassroots fundraising to voter protection. As a member of this nascent team, you will have the opportunity to shape our mandate and broaden our impact.
We are a fully remote, distributed team living in 19 states and from a variety of backgrounds. Some of us have worked in political campaigns, others in public sector tech, and others in industry. We value diversity in perspective, lived experience, and the many paths one may take into working in political technology. We believe deeply in the promise of breaking the boom-bust cycle of political tech work and building technology infrastructure that will support campaigns from cycle to cycle and will improve with every iteration.

Who you are:
We’re focused on equipping our distributed organizing and grassroots fundraising teams with the analytics and technology resources they need to operate intelligently and efficiently, and are looking for an Analytics Engineer with a strong technical background to help us shape the future of this team and our mobilization efforts.Whether 2020 was your first time volunteering for a campaign or you've been working with electoral data teams for multiple cycles, we'd love to talk to you.
Good candidates are willing to get nerdy about the details while staying focused on our goal of electing Democrats. On a day-to-day basis, our team cares about things like linking sustaining contributions, optimizing texting outreach to volunteers, and pinpointing misaligned reference codes, to name a few.

Among other things, in this role you could help us:

    • Contribute to building new data pipelines to transform platform data for analysis, reporting, and operational workflows. Using tools like SQL, dbt, and Airflow, write and review code that produces trusted datasets. Example: Build an aggregated table of outreach to volunteers to accurately track our sources of volunteer recruitment.
    • Collaborate on requirements for new data products built by the team. Discuss various approaches and strategies for new infrastructure products, focusing on ease of use, scalability, and accuracy. Example: Design a scalable pipeline that aggregates hundreds of millions of email interactions into usable tables for reporting.
    • Scale up internal documentation on our existing derived data products. This includes technical guidelines on how to use our existing products for our internal users as well as pioneering technical best practices implemented by the team. Example: Increase correct usage of derived data products by creating materials that document common use cases and data assumptions for an existing aggregate table with email outreach metrics.

Some things that might make you right for this role (Good candidates might check many of these boxes, but don’t let this list stop you from applying):

    • You are proficient in SQL and comfortable reasoning about very large datasets;
    • You have experience working with political data like state voter files, election results, or data on voter, volunteer, or donor engagement;
    • You have used SQL to create reusable processes or pipelines with tools like Airflow or dbt;
    • You have experience tackling new, messy datasets, and structuring them for quick analysis and insights;
    • You are comfortable with one or more of the following tools: Python, R, data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Periscope, Google Data Studio), workflow management tools (e.g. dbt, Airflow, Mistral, Prefect) or political CRMs (e.g. Votebuilder, NGP, BSD);
    • You have strong written and verbal communication skills, and experience explaining technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences;
    • You can turn independent analysis projects into sustainable, documented workflows, and have experience building systems that can be used across teams and are designed with longevity in mind; and,
    • You are curious, collaborative, and humble – ready to work with a diverse, distributed team to solve interesting problems together.
