About the Role

The Athletic is looking for a creative, scrappy social expert to join our Audience team as a Senior Manager, Social Engagement. In this role, you will be responsible for strategy & execution of social-first content that drives brand awareness, account growth and post engagement. The Senior Manager, Social Engagement has a vision to create & join the sports conversation to engage a passionate audience of fans on social and manage a team to cover all accounts. This is a remote-based role.

Responsibilities

    • Manage entire suite of brand social media accounts on all major platforms (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, YouTube).
    • Ensure execution of social strategy, including creation of social-first content and amplification of top articles to engage fans during key sports moments.
    • Mentor and manage junior staff and freelancers, helping them learn our voice and strategy, execute our vision, and grow their careers.
    • Drive brand awareness through implementation of consistent brand voice across all accounts & beautiful design assets reflecting The Athletic’s look and feel.
    • Develop processes in conjunction with other Audience team managers to distribute breaking news and produce & share content related to the news cycle on social and our home page.
    • Establish & maintain relationships with vertical editors on content programming, social strategies and best practices.
    • Diversify social content across accounts with mix of articles, podcasts, videos.
    • Execute feature & editorial launches on social to create awareness & engagement.
    • Identify cross-functional processes and develop copy & visual assets to amplify top stories across network.
    • Build talent product awareness by partnering with the editorial and marketing teams to promote various writers and features revolving around key initiatives & moments.

Requirements

    • 6-8 years experience in social media or digital marketing.
    • Extensive experience with content creation & distribution via social media.
    • At least 3 years of prior people management experience.
    • Vision for leveraging videos & unique design assets across social.   
    • Passion for engaging a community of passionate sports fans.
    • Proven track record of exhibiting creativity & innovation to develop brand voice.
    • Exceptional analytical skills; ability to generate insights from data.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to a variety of audiences.
    • Strong understanding with The Athletic value prop & content types.
    • Drive to make an impact and ability to learn quickly at a fast-growing, nimble start-up.
    • Experience with managing & developing careers of direct reports preferred.
    • Bachelor’s degree required.
