About the Role

Data is at the center of The Athletic’s decision-making process. It informs everything we do around the product, marketing, and even how we produce our content. As a Manager of the Product and Growth Analytics team, you will lead a team of analysts supporting our product workstreams. You will help shape the way success is measured, define what strategic questions should be asked, and scale analytics methods and tools to support our product team efforts. You will work in a highly collaborative environment with the product, marketing, data science, data ops, and engineering teams. Your analyses will fuel our growth and product strategy and shape the future development of our product and marketing operation. You will provide deep insight into customer behavior. You should have a robust knowledge of product feature evaluations, customer behaviors, experimentations analysis for a consumer subscription company. You must be willing to be a technical mentor for the team and excited about shaping the data culture in the company. 

Responsibilities

    • Build, lead and mentor a high-performing team of analysts.
    • Execute complicated IC  projects and guide analysts through their own analysis.
    • Partner with product managers to size opportunities and define success for key strategic projects, new feature launches.
    • Partner with engineering managers and Analytics Operations to ensure the quality of upstream data and that data modeling processes fully support analytics needs.
    • Leverage your experience in A/B testing and other causal inference approaches to identify, design, execute and analyze thoughtful experiments to make high-impact changes.
    • Provide high impact recommendations to senior leadership to influence company strategy based on in-depth analyses.
    • Build and improve our reporting and experimentation capabilities including dashboards, attribution models, and data models.
    • Establish working relationships and processes with our Data Science team regarding roadmapping, experimentation design, LTV estimations, etc. 
    • Foster a data-driven, test-and-learn culture with your passion for telling stories with data.
    • Deeply understand the business and proactively spot risks and opportunities.

Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Systems, Economics, or related field or related field or related field. 
    • 5+ years of experience in data analytics, data science or analytic engineering role.
    • 3+ years of management experience.
    • A proven track record of using quantitative analysis to impact key decisions.
    • A strong storyteller able to communicate effectively with managers and executives.
    • Understanding of statistical analysis, regression models, clustering techniques, causal inference techniques, and common pitfalls of data analysis.
    • Fluency in SQL and at least one analytic programming language (Python or R).
    • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, both at the executive level and with peers and cross-functional teams.
    • An understanding of revenue models for subscription-based businesses.
