Applied Scientist Economic Research - Intern

About the team

Join our industry-leading Economic Research team bringing innovative analysis, creativity and excellence to the U.S. housing market. We create, productionalize, analyze, and share a full suite of housing data products and analysis for an audience inside and outside of Zillow. Our work contextualizes Zillow’s unparalleled living database of all homes and hundreds of millions of customers to provide insight to everyday consumers and open data to hundreds of researchers and policymakers across the country. You’ll work in an informal, fun, collaborative atmosphere with a dynamic team with a diverse range of interests and skills.

About the role

Zillow Group’s Economic Research team is looking for a forward thinking and curious Applied Scientist intern who has a passion for applying creative data science solutions to business problems and tackle them systematically with mathematical models. We are always looking for the best model for the job, whether it is a random forest, deep neural nets, matrix factorization, or GLM and if we cannot find one, we will invent it. At the center of Zillow’s effort to build the future of real estate, this team will be responsible for creating innovative solutions to challenging problems, many entirely new for the company but all central to our mission to empower the consumer and transform the real estate industry by building a true marketplace.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Collaborate with other Applied Scientists to develop and refine models that track the housing market at a variety of regional levels, using data from our living database of 100M+ homes, transactions, and users (think nowcasting, hierarchical modeling, clustering etc.)

  • Create diagnostic, quality, and suppression metrics using heuristics to more advanced models to ensure data quality at scale (over millions of models for different geographies/home type cuts)

  • Work on a data product important for both internal and external customers

  • Work on visualizing and interpreting data on a large scale

  • Work closely with our engineering team to productionalize models

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live in any of the 50 US States, with limited exceptions. In certain cases, an employee in a remote-designated job may need to live in a specific region or time zone to support customers or clients as part of their role.

Who you are

  • In the process of completing a Master’s or PhD in Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Econometrics, Physics, Earth Sciences, or related scientific field involving mathematical modeling (preferred) with a graduation date between Dec 2021 and Summer 2022.

  • Proficiency in statistics, regression modeling, and machine learning models

  • Experience in or interest in learning distributed computing frameworks (Spark, Hadoop, Kafka, Flink, Pig, etc.)

  • Proficiency in scientific programming, including data manipulation, modeling, and visualization, Python strongly preferred

  • Ability to conduct independent research and apply research methods to real-world problems

  • Ability to communicate and present results to both technical and non technical audiences

  • Background in spatial statistics a plus
