About the role

Zillow Group’s Economic Research team is looking for an experienced and forward-thinking Senior Economist who has a passion for applying creative solutions to business problems by systematically employing economic and mathematical frameworks and models. We are always looking for ways to better measure our business and, in particular, the impact that the housing market and other external factors have on it. At the center of Zillow’s effort to build the future of real estate, this team will be responsible for creating innovative solutions to challenging problems, which are central to our mission to empower the consumer and transform the real estate industry by building a true marketplace.

You Will Get To:

  • Build interpretable models to measure the impact of real estate market developments on Zillow’s business and financial performance
  • Help use our suite of world-class housing market metrics to benchmark Zillow’s performance to the market environment
  • Assist the business in optimizing its response to forecasted or stress test scenarios of the real estate market by suggesting which policies to follow
  • Build novel analytical frameworks and models from the ground up
  • Apply economic analysis to a host of problems ranging from impact analysis, performance attribution, segmentation, and pricing
  • Communicate results and insights to key partners in business, marketing, finance, and analytics
  • Work closely with applied scientists and engineers to productionalize models

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice which must be identified to the Company. Employees may live in any of the 50 US States, with limited exceptions. In certain cases, an employee in a remote-designated job may need to live in a specific region or time zone to support customers or clients as part of their role.

You are eager to learn about the problems our business faces and translate them to models, no matter how ambiguous or complex. Using the intuition you've developed through education and applied experience, you revel in the opportunity to build models from the ground up. You are passionate about helping our business succeed by making data driven recommendations based on your analysis. You take pride in your work and enjoy explaining your findings to analytics and business partners.

Qualifications

  • A Masters Degree and 5+ years experience OR a PhD and 3+ years of experience in Economics, Statistics, Finance, or a related quantitative discipline
  • Demonstrated ability to manipulate, model, and visualize data in either Python or R
  • Familiarity with SQL
  • Desire to succeed in a self-starting environment where you can innovate with a high degree of freedom and make a large business impact
  • Expertise in applied causal inference and mathematical/econometric models
  • Passion for better understanding the relationship between external factors and business outcomes
  • Experience building interpretable models for impact analysis, performance attribution, segmentation, or pricing
  • Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills with the ability to communicate and present complex results to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experiencing working cross-functionally between business, tech, and science teams
