Job Description

Zendesk is seeking an expert Data Engineering Manager to join The Foundation Analytics team. This role includes managing a team of passionate engineers to implement data pipelines, a data lake, and a data warehouse for the Zendesk Data Platform (ZDP). An applicable individual with a strong background in data engineering and a proven track record in handling and scaling data-related projects.

At Zendesk, you can apply your technical expertise and leadership skills to guide and enable your team. You will provide coaching and mentorship to your team members, helping them grow both technically and expertly.

The team is planning, building, and shipping features, which may involve developing software or implementing solutions using open source frameworks like Apache Spark, Flink, Hudi, Iceberg. Depending on the solution, you may deploy services into our Kubernetes clusters or run standalone clusters using AWS EMR or similar technologies. In collaboration with tech leads, you will ensure that the team makes sound architectural decisions aligned with business strategy. You will drive the regular shipment of architecturally sound software and facilitate productive retrospectives to continuously improve the team's processes.

You will play a crucial role in enabling Zendesk to gain a single view of data, make data-driven decisions, and improve operational efficiencies. Data is at the heart of Zendesk's business, and this role offers the opportunity to have a significant impact across all of our product organisation!

What you'll be doing:

  • Collaborate with the Product team to clarify, refine, and communicate product priorities.

  • Advocate for scalability, reliability, and efficiency in discussions on the technical roadmap.

  • Conduct regular, open, committed 1:1s with your reports.

  • Help team members set specific, achievable goals and further their careers.

  • Be responsible for the recruitment of new team members and facilitate a speedy, engaged interview process.

  • Run daily scrum team meetings, maintain the backlog of prioritized tasks, and plan the roadmap for the year ahead.

  • Provide regular feedback to the team in a gentle and direct manner.

  • Participate in designing and developing key features and functionality of our data platform.

  • Investigate production issues and fine-tune our data pipelines.

  • Continually improve data pipelines for high efficiency, throughput, and data quality.

What you bring to the role:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Several years of experience leading people across one or more teams.

  • Knowledge of building and shipping software at scale with a team.

  • Sound understanding of data engineering principles and incorporating standard processes.

  • Shown experience in designing, along with implementing data pipelines, data lakes, and data warehouses.

  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in the data space, such as Java and Python.space, such as Java and Python.

  • Familiarity with distributed computing frameworks, for example Apache Spark and Apache Flink.

  • Advanced understanding of cloud-based technologies and services, with a focus on data-related technologies.

  • Knowledge of agile development practices and experience working in agile teams.

  • Flexibility and passion for cultivating change in your team.

  • The ability to be direct and address issues head-on when needed, without being uncaring.

  • Mindfulness and to stay calm when others get flustered.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.

  • Refined prioritization skills to focus your time and energy where it will have the most impact.

  • Dedication to continual self-development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience writing ETL jobs to address various data engineering challenges.

  • Strong understanding of build and deployment tools.

The Poland annualized base salary range for this position is zł255,000.00-zł383,000.00. Please note that while the salary range represents the minimum and maximum base salary rate for this position, the actual compensation offered will be based on job related capabilities, applicable experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for bonus, benefits, or related incentives that will be communicated during the offer stage.
