Job Description

Zendesk is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to join The Data Platform team. The team is responsible for implementing a globally distributed system that uses state of the art cloud technologies that span Amazon Web Services. Our goal is to help 170,000+ global businesses truly understand customer interactions at depths never thought possible until now.

As a Staff Data Engineer in Foundation Analytics, you will be responsible for building many key parts of the foundation data services platform including next generation reporting and analytics. Working closely with your team members to craft, develop and deliver reporting products for our customers and high quality software projects on time.

Data is at the heart of Zendesk’s business! This is an autonomous role that can have a huge impact across all of the Zendesk product family.

What you’ll be doing

  • Publish well written and tested code to production

  • Participate in designing and developing key features and functionality of our data platform

  • Investigate production issues and fine-tune our data pipelines

  • Continually improve data pipelines for high efficiency, throughput and quality of data

  • Create production ready solutions with monitoring, alerting, logging, and documentation that enable any team member to easily support all services owned by the team.

  • Participate in on-call support for our services

  • Build a platform that will be the foundation for our customer facing reporting features, our machine learning initiatives, and internal product analytics

  • Collaborate with team members on researching and brainstorming different solutions for technical challenges we face

  • Solve sophisticated problems with enthusiasm and technical leadership. helping to discover solutions to complex problems

  • Develop standard methodologies and mentor other engineers to help make technical decisions on projects

What you bring to the role

Basic Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of software development/data engineering experience with 5+ years of hands-on experience of building scalable data platforms and/or reliable data pipelines

  • Java, Python, Scala (proficient in at least one)

  • Developer skills; demonstrating a strong passion to design scalable and fault-tolerant software systems

  • Experience with AWS or related cloud technologies

  • Experience in developing and operating high volume, high availability environments

  • Working understanding of Kubernetes’ infrastructure and security best practices

  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic, occasionally interrupt driven environment that includes geographically spread teams and customers

  • Solid working understanding in Data Modeling

  • Demonstrated ability with cloud and data related technologies.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience writing ETL jobs to help address various data engineering challenges

  • Strong understanding of build tools and deployment tools

  • Strong understanding of Java language and development tools

  • Familiarity with Kafka, Flink, Spark frameworks with validated understanding of at least one job scheduling tool: Airflow, Celery, AWS Step functions


Tech Stack

  • Our data pipelines are written in Java and Python based software stacks

  • We utilize many open source technologies, including: Spark, Flink, Hudi, Airflow

  • Our software runs on AWS services like EMR and in Kubernetes, and integrates with AWS services S3, Athena, and Glue for data access

The US annualized base salary range for this position is $162,000.00-$242,000.00. This position may also be eligible for bonus, benefits, or related incentives. While this range reflects the minimum and maximum value for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations, the offer for the successful candidate for this position will be based on job related capabilities, applicable experience, and other factors such as work location. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only (or OTE for commissions based roles), and do not include bonus, benefits, or related incentives.
