The Data Scientist leads analytic projects and initiatives that support the delivery of Vital Decisions’ services to the right individuals at the right time, ensuring medical care that an individual receives during an advanced illness aligns with the individual’s goals and quality of life priorities over time as one progresses toward end of life. Using data sciences skill sets and advanced quantitative analytic methods, the Data Scientist provides hands on technical expertise in the creation and presenting of analytics and insights that prospectively identify client opportunities, retrospectively demonstrate accurate program performance, and continuously improve program value and impact. The leader in this position will be the first line of analytic support for sales, client services, operations, and organizational leadership, and will have primary accountability for executing and delivering clear and accurate, client-facing return on investment (ROI) and related outcomes plausibility analyses.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Return on Investment (ROI)
- Manage and meet all Vital Decisions obligations to provide clients with accurate, clear, and timely ROI analyses
- Maintain and communicate a calendar of ROI analysis obligations, including interim steps to gather and validate data, internal reviews with key stakeholders, and all other steps required to delivering high quality and timely analyses
- Maintain a library and database of all ROI and related outcomes analysis covering individual clients and the Vital Decisions’ book of business as a whole
- Develop and maintain current and future ROI code and documentation in support of ROI and related analyses
- Develop and maintain best practice language and visualizations that clearly articulate program value and where appropriate, provide additional insights, for communicating ROI results to clients and internal stakeholders
- Run ROI analyses, draft and review outcome reports, investigate variances, provide feedback to operations and process owners, and be the subject matter expert internally and externally
- Report and address any savings and ROI results that are not within expectation
- ID root causes
- Report findings and recommendations to ELT
- Opportunity Assessment (OA)
- Support sales with accurate, clear and timely opportunity assessments for prospective clients – with and the without access to prospect claims data
- Maintain and use updated state cost of dying tables based on CMS/Dartmouth and VDI BoB
- Maintain and use updated library of VDI case savings rates by client and LOB
- Maintain a library and database of all OA analyses delivered to prospects and connected to ROI analyses for prospects that become clients covering individual clients and the Vital Decisions’ book of business as a whole
- Develop and maintain OA process documentation including coding used to execute OA and related analyses
- Develop and maintain best language and visualizations that clearly articulate program value potential
- Run OA analyses, draft and review reports, investigate variances, provide feedback to operations and process owners, and be the subject matter expert internally and externally
- Coordinate the mortality model scoring of prospective populations with Informatics or other process owners
- Mortality Modeling
- Provide project management and thought leadership support to mortality modeling design, development and application for monthly scoring and other operational processes’ execution efforts
- Be accountable for contextualizing and communicating mortality modeling outcomes including retrospective analyses and creating death curves for specific populations to continuously evaluate mortality model performance
- Identify and manage best approaches for accurate, complete, and timely identification of decedent death date data to support ROI and Mortality Modeling processes
- Provide Monthly validated death counts by client to CS and ELT based on all available sources (Plan, PBI with VDI validation, Claims, Program, etc.
- Maintain with any needed code updates e.g., CPTs, update/retrain as needed, and extend PPV reporting with each CMS data update
- End of Life Medical Cost Analysis
- Lead, design, and manage research into end-of-life cost drivers, patterns of medical utilization, actionable segmentations and stratifications
- Leverage EOL analysis and insights to propose improvements to program targeting methodologies as well as optimization of interventions and other program components
- Support the Product and Analytics Road Map
- Provide analytics input and leadership to support and drive initiatives on the Vital Decisions Product and Analytics Road Map
- Provide general analytic and project management process expertise and leadership across the organization especially including requests for support from the senior leadership team
- Produce Value and Impact tables and presentations to fully meet client obligations and CS needs (compliant to contract, accurate, clear, timely)
- Support & drive ad hoc analytic opportunities and requests to drive business growth and improvement.

- Build and sustain relationships with analytics counterparts at clients, partners and vendors
- Keep abreast of industry trends, attend conferences, outside learning and facilitate proactive information sharing to peers at client level
The Experience We Prefer:
- Bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Physics, or related field. Masters or Doctorate level preferred; and/or extensive work-related experience will be considered.
- 2-5+ years of experience with R, SQL, and Python required.
- Proven ability to create data analytics and build models using advanced techniques and tools
- Solid programing skills to develop repeatable analytic and reporting processes
- Proficiency working with BI and visualization tools
- Strong process management, critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making
- Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills
- Excellent time and priority management to support multiple concurrent initiatives and priorities
- Proven leadership or active participation in peer communities
- Experience developing content for publications for academic journals
- Comfort level and ease presenting analysis, results, and insights to health plan clients including C-suite with confidence and credibility; Up to 50% of this role may be client facing
- Project a positive, solutions-oriented attitude along with core company values
Technical Requirements:
Currently, Evolent employees work remotely temporarily due to COVID-19. As such, we require that all employees have the following technical capability at their home: High speed internet over 10 Mbps and, specifically for all call center employees, the ability to plug in directly to the home internet router. These at-home technical requirements are subject to change with any scheduled re-opening of our office locations.

Compensation Range: The minimum salary for this position is $100,000, plus benefits. Salaries are determined by the skill set required for the position and commensurate with experience and may vary above and below the stated amounts.
